College Transfer App

Problem

80% of community college students intend to transfer to a 4-year college, but only 25% are successful. Students often miss key application or financial deadlines that delay or derail their plans. And it's difficult to find out how credits apply to the 4-year college, so students often waste time and money taking courses that don't apply to their bachelor's degree.

Solution

Designed a web application for desktop and mobile to allow students to enter in their course history and see in real-time how it will apply to their degree at the 4-year college.

During discovery, we uncovered that even with a course mapping tool, students would still struggle to transfer on time, unless they had a dedicated mentor that had gone through the process before. These mentors ensured that the student remembered some of the more minor things, like applying for FAFSA, filling out housing paperwork, etc.

I advocated for an expansion of the app to include a transfer checklist and a resource guide to help students understand all steps to transfer successfully, and connect them with resources that will make their transition successful.

Success metrics:

  • 1,500 users after 2 months at 2 colleges

  • 30% of users created accounts

  • 50% of applicants created accounts

  • 5 new colleges signed up for the app

Responsibilities

  • Conducted user interviews to better understand where students were getting hung up in the transfer process

  • Designed a desktop and mobile design for the web app

  • Prototyped the designs

  • User tested and iterated on the designs

  • Collaborated and compromised with product managers and developer to meet the aggressive launch schedule
